This is one of the most historic spots in County Leitrim and was named after King James I of England. It was walled and fortified to protect the "planters" who came there to settle from England and Scotland from those from whom the land had been confiscated. One of the gates is still standing.

Today, Jamestown is a pleasant mooring spot and is also popular with anglers due to the good fishing and excellent hospitality.
