Cruising
Take some time to look and experience simple
Pleasures. Wild flowers on grassy banks.
Kingfishers skim over waving reeds. Herons stand
proud and poised…. Relax, you are amongst friends.
Water waves its spell through the gentle valleys, illuminating the landscape with liquid light. A canal, laced with lakes, weds two great rivers, presenting a cruising paradise of great beauty.
Our Waterways
The rivers Shannon and Erne are the two main river systems in Ireland and are linked by the recently restored Shannon Erne Waterway which provides 750km of cruising waterway. Carrick-on-Shannon, the county town of Leitrim is the cruising capital of the river Shannon and the town boasts a beautiful modern marina and is the most northerly hire base on the Shannon.
Carrick on Shannon's marinas are well worth a visit, particularly during the peak summer season where a large flotilla of cabin cruisers and river craft of all sizes are active on the river. The town is lively with a great selection of shops, pubs and restaurants. The area boasts many talented musicians, providing lively sessions in local pubs nightly. As the river makes its way south through the county it passes through the lovely villages of Drumsna, Dromod and Rooskey which also have wonderful riverside bars and restaurants.
There is a marina at Rooskey and mooring facilities in Jamestown, Drumsna and Dromod.
Carrick-on-Shannon nestles on the most scenic stretch of the Shannon and is gateway to the Shannon-Erne Waterway, Lough Key, Acres Lake and Lough Allen via the picturesque villages of Cootehall, Knockvicar, Leitrim, Drumshanbo and Keshcarrigan.
The
Shannon-Erne Waterway
, previously known as the 19th Century Ballinamore-Ballyconnell
Canal, was opened in 1994 after a three year, £30 million restoration programme. The re-opening of this magnificent waterway which links Ireland's two most significant waterways, the Shannon and the Erne, has revitalised a natural unspoilt countryside and has created 750km of cruising waterway. It traverses the counties of Leitrim, Cavan and Fermanagh, passing under 34 original stone bridges and through 16 fully automated locks.
